Access Now is a growing international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world, including issues of privacy, security, freedom of expression, and transparency. Our policy, advocacy, technology, and operations teams have staff presences in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East/North Africa (MENA), North America, and South/Southeast Asia, to provide global support to our mission.

About this role 

Access Now is looking to reinforce its efforts in Tunisia and the wider MENA region to ensure that legislation and policies around the region respect and extend human rights in the digital age. The MENA Policy Analyst works primarily to advance our policy work in Tunisia, focusing mainly on freedom of expression, privacy, and data protection. They also work closely with the MENA Policy Manager to support and contribute to Access Now’s strategy to ensure that human rights in the digital age are high on the agenda in the MENA region in the upcoming years.

The MENA Policy Analyst is housed within the Policy Team arm, reports directly through the MENA Policy Manager, and collaborates closely with other members of the Organization’s global Policy, Advocacy and Legal Teams.

What you will do

  • Collaborate with the MENA Policy Manager, the MENA Campaigner, and other colleagues throughout different teams to identify and execute new projects and priorities that advance our mission in MENA
  • Research and craft legal, policy, and legislative analysis, written briefs, campaign content, press releases, blog posts, social media, white papers, and multimedia content
  • Track and engage with legislation and administrative proceedings in MENA, and contribute to strategies for seeing Access Now’s core policies adopted and enforced
  • Conduct monitoring of relevant digital rights issues in the region, monitoring the release of academic publications and summarizing relevant findings to inform our work
  • Support and identify opportunities for collaboration with partners, policymakers, and stakeholders in Tunisia and the MENA region to advance regional community objectives on digital rights
  • Advise the MENA Policy Manager and the global Policy Director on MENA issues and strategy
  • Contribute to our overall global Policy strategy in different thematic areas, following facilitation by the MENA Policy Manager
  • Support execution of Access Now events, including RightsCon
  • Other relevant duties and tasks assigned

Skills, education, and mindset you will bring

  • Degree in law, political science, public policy, international relations, or a similar field – or demonstrated equivalent practical experience
  • Solid understanding and interest in human rights, public policy, technology, and public organising in the MENA region with a deeper knowledge in at least one of these areas
  • Ability to bridge the gap between policy and technology (technical background a plus)
  • Preference for previous work in the areas of internet freedom, internet governance, human rights, legal education, political communication, internet engineering, and/or new technologies, with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Experience engaging and supporting diverse communities including women, LGBTQI or queer communities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to organise and facilitate events, workshops, and small meetings
  • Global perspective and ability to participate in a team with people from around the world
  • Fluency in English and Arabic is required; knowledge of French is a plus
  • Experience working in a grassroots organisations with member activists is a plus

 

The Details

 

Location

This is a full-time position, based in Tunis. At this time Access Now Team Members are working remotely full-time, with a likely return to office arrangements in Tunis, at some point in 2022.

Qualified candidates in remote locations (within 2 hours of UTC+1 time zone) will be considered. The successful candidate must possess the right to work in the location in which they will be based. We are unable to sponsor visas or relocations for this role.

Remuneration

Access Now offers competitive compensation and benefits packages that align with our office localities. The starting salary for this role is anticipated at or around د.ت TND 88,000, gross annually, and will be determined by depth of experience and preparation.
